I’m back again for another “This or That” post, but this time I’ll be featuring two chocolate cookies I tried out. I have the Kumori Chocolate Chip Cookie to start, then I’ll share my take on the Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie from Scout’s Honor.
Kumori Bakery: Honoring Japanese baking traditions
The first cookie on the block is the Chocolate Chip Cookie from Kumori Bakery, a local patisserie following the Japanese artisanal baking tradition. Kumori Bakery is more known for its mini cheesecakes and cheese tarts, but it also has other offerings. This cookie is almost the same size as the one from Scout’s Honor, but it uses Meiji chocolate—which I personally liked.
Meiji’s chocolate is the same kind of chocolate in memorable childhood snacks such as Hello Panda (small, panda-shaped biscuits with chocolate filling) and Yan Yan (stick-shaped biscuits with chocolate dip.) The chocolate compliments the chewy consistency of the cookie, which definitely reminded me of the cookies I used to dip in milk.
Scout’s Honor: American scout cookies at home
The other cookie I have here is the Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie from Scout’s Honor, another homegrown food joint. From solely serving cookies based on the ones sold by members of the American scouting movement before, the restaurant has expanded to include full meals. As I mentioned above, the cookie from Scout’s Honor is almost the same size as that of Kumori Bakery’s.
It uses a dark chocolate which gives the cookie a slightly bitter note, but the presence of white chocolate counters this bitterness. It was chewy yet still had a bit of crunch, perfect for dipping in coffee as it didn’t easily fall apart. The Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie is one cookie designed for more mature palates and more discriminating tastes.
Will it be this Chocolate Chip Cookie by Kumori Bakery, or that Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie by Scout’s Honor?
And my verdict goes to…Kumori Bakery’s Chocolate Chip Cookie! Its use of Meiji chocolate took me back to my childhood—Hello Panda and Yan Yan included! Every bite of this made me reminisce how simple the days back then were.
That’s it for my second “This or That” post, and until the next one – bon appetit and stay safe!
