106 – On Hipster Beans and Cups: Toby’s Estate Coffee, Ruby Road

Ah, third wave coffee. Originally a response to the overly commercialized brews that mainstream coffee shops offer, going the specialty route is the “in” thing nowadays. Even my millennial Facebook contacts are starting to appreciate coffee as something artisanal. Which is good, since most people take their cup of coffee for granted. Enter Toby’s Estate from Australia, a third wave coffee shop gaining popularity among coffee enthusiasts and the millennial crowd who loves their respective cups of joe. It opened its flagship branch in Makati’s Salcedo Village, followed by two more Makati locations, and a fourth one at SM Aura Premier in Taguig.

Fortunately, Northerners like yours truly need not go to the Democratic People’s Republic of Binaylandia for a taste of artisanal coffee. Toby’s Estate recently opened its newest branch at the Ortigas area in Pasig, in the same vicinity as The Podium and SM Megamall. It’s located along Ruby Road, for those who have vehicles. If you’re traveling on foot, do note that its location is not exactly a familiar sight in the area. You will have to walk to the back of the Joy-Nostalg Center (Oakwood Premier) building, cross at Topaz Road, and pass through the side of another building to reach it.

This was actually my second time to try out Toby’s Estate, since I was lucky enough to join CJ’s family during their first trip here. I liked how this place, with its white and gray interiors, proved to be a respite from the urban jungle that is Ortigas. Whether you’re alone and want to work on some projects, or you feel like chatting with friends—seating isn’t a problem here. The wall frescoes serve as reminders of the cafe’s urban location; millennials will call the place “Instagrammable”, perfect for posting on their social media accounts. Oh, and did I mention that they have magazines for browsing—if you’re not a fan of the mobile lifestyle like me?

But you know what makes this place memorable? The Bucky’s. Yes, those rich and compact brownies this places prides itself on. It’s so packed, you could use those things to build a house. If only the three little pigs discovered this before the big bad wolf arrived and they worked together to create a house from the brownie bricks.

Okay, I’ll stop at this point to show you the pictures from our recent trip. Visit their official website and Facebook page to know more  about Toby’s Estate and their trademark third-wave coffee. Until the next review, bon appetit.
