105 – On Metropolitan Matcha: St. Marc Cafe, UP Town Center

AUTHOR’S NOTE: It is with some sadness that I add this comment: this particular branch of St. Marc Cafe is now defunct after a recent trip to UP Town Center. Timestamp: 21 January 2019, 07:12 am.

Ever since St. Marc Cafe opened at SM Megamall, people have been lining up to buy their chococro (chocolate croissants) by the box. They also have a white chocolate variant which is equally popular, aside from a seasonal croissant flavor that runs for a limited time. But aside from their flaky croissants and other baked specialties, they also serve amazing drinks—both hot and cold. St. Marc Cafe is another food venture brought to the country by Ben Chan and the Bench group, the same people behind PAUL Boulangerie in SM Aura.

Imagine our excitement when we found out that they will open a branch at UP Town Center! I was sure it would be a hit with the mall’s crowd, consisting mostly of students from the nearby universities and schools. And fortunately, it was. The cafe has four branches as of this typing; the flagship branch at SM Megamall, one in Greenbelt 3, this branch at UP Town Center, and a new one at SM North EDSA. With two new locations up north, we no longer need to drive to Ortigas anymore!

I’m a fan of their hot Matcha Latte, and I make sure to order the large cup with every visit. Its flavor is perfectly balanced – none of the overwhelming leafy and bitter taste (because of too much matcha powder) or excessively rich creaminess (because of too much milk). The sweetness is just right likewise, with no need to add sugar anymore. Another noteworthy drink to try out is their Yuzu Tea, which happens to be CJ’s favorite. St. Marc Cafe uses yuzu (Japanese citron) marmalade for this one; it’s best to stir it first before drinking for a wonderful and citrus-y surprise. Aside from these, they also serve a wide variety of desserts—all with a touch of Nippon.

Recently, the cafe has started adding savory dishes to their repertoire. Their initial offerings include sandwiches, pasta, and the latest addition: curry rice. I tried out the latter during my previous visit and, although not on the same caliber as CoCo Ichibanya, it’s one of the exceptional ones I had so far. Do note though that some items may only be available at certain St. Marc Cafe branches.

Enough of the introductions and let’s proceed to the pictures. Do check our their Facebook page to stay updated with their latest promotions. Until the next review, bon appetit.
