87 – On Southern Chicken In The North: Wee Nam Kee, Fairview Terraces

(EDIT: This place is already closed permanently; I passed by last June 6 and alas, the place was boarded up. Timestamp: 7 June 2017, 07:35 am.)

Fairview Terraces, the newest mall at the northern Quezon City area, is just a 20 to 30 minute drive away from where I live. This new establishment by the Ayala Group, fronting longtime mall SM Fairview, is built on land formerly owned by Ramon Jacinto. Yes, you read that right—the man behind RJ 100.3 on the FM band, the RJ Guitar Center, and the Jacinto Color steel roofing company. Just like Trinoma right across SM North, Fairview Terraces is primarily catered to the A to upper C class market.

Among the new restaurants that opened in the mall is Wee Nam Kee, a famous joint from Singapore serving Hainanese chicken rice. The restaurant, said to be the benchmark of the best Hainanese chicken, has branches in some Ayala developments like Trinoma, Ayala Triangle Gardens, and Serendra. It was good that they opened a branch at Fairview Terraces; no need for me to visit Trinoma anymore for my Hainanese chicken fix!

Mention Hainanese chicken and the first thing that comes into people’s minds would be those modern-looking hawker centers in Singapore. Enter Wee Nam Kee, and you’re not transported to a place—you step back in time. The walls are in a deep crimson color, complemented by the wooden chairs in dark varnish. Eastern-style lamps in bright colors provide a break from the intense earth tones. I took a seat near the Wellworth entrance, and chatted with the branch manager while deciding on what to order. Apparently, this location doesn’t have much diners; maybe because they need to catch up on promotions and publicity, given that this is a new branch. I hope this review of mine helps.

Here are the pictures from my visit to Wee Nam Kee’s Fairview Terraces branch. Visit and like their Facebook page here for more updates and promotions.

Until the next review, bon appetit.
